Well in the public park and ride category I would like to nominate the park and ride for the City of Bath. It does need you to look beyond the immediate car park provision. And in fact in the pouring rain on Monday the ground was a sloppy sandy mess, and the week before the failure of the public unisex toilets to open despite piling in the money. But beyond those the car park sits sheilding a playing field and beautiful views across the valley . Not an obvious attraction though when parking . Because mostly thoughts are on getting to the City.
Leaving Bath the road takes me along a minor road twisty and relatively narrow with banks and hedges on either side . Not single track . But if I were walking one I would be worried about quick escape routes from oncoming traffic.. no verges.
Leaving Bath early evening I was just in a slow trail . One of those where you can be stopped and wind down the window and take in the sights, sounds and smells of the place. I was so close to the hedge I could have taken the hawthorn for tea… the bread and cheese leaf. The traffic line was mostly so slow it was stopped for ages between moving just a car’s length so with the window down I could take a picture … to be loaded up and shared

I can hardly say this is my commute area. But it fits under the subject type. I have been collecting car park commuting and car park treasure pictures for ages now – and rarely have the image on the device to load. Also I write notes about my regular – oh and irregular journeys on what note pad I might have when the fleeting scene crosses the view. The intention always to share that moment or the captured image, either the photograph or the wordy description. But coming back later the mood has gone. And the notes need to stay in whatever book they are.
This picture is not at all a regular commute, but a quiet car park on a cold, wet and misty day at the start of April. A visit to Niagara – visit the Falls. Impressive as the sound of the falls was immediate as soon as we got out the car. Impressive even with restricted views and as you see here the mist levels hovering so low. Humbling the force of the natural phenomenon, quite overwhelming possibly even because of restricted view.
yes I have to admit that i like the car park image too. I know this is after the event, but as I am sorting out the holiday album and deciding what to do with the red poncho .. not inappropriate.
As a particular one is in the news. That particular car park for the gym , has spaces on the building’s roof but there is no access for cars. In the Independent today, the journalist has had a tour of the space. Glanced at this over breakfast and I do not have the details, but surprised the gym has not made use of the space for some sort of exercise.
So my suggestion is to use the space for a differnt type of exercise .. Allow people to park there .. A performance park, a meeting park . Being open air , above ground on higher ground would offer a new perspective as a park for discussion. Above the hum of street noise and perhaps cut off from the rhythm of the machines and people straining muscles on the floors below , perhaps solutions to that town’s parking problems will be uncovered.
Practicalities? Would it be free parking? Would you have to flash a gym membership card to access the area? Should there need to be protection from the weather added ? And the inpracticalities … Beyond the reason why they have this space .. Assuming the roof was originally constructed to hold the weight of the cars and then also have magicked up some money then I think a couple of cars maybe a van and a mini bus should lifted up by crane . These then would create small enclosed venues meeting spaces changing rooms and still feed from idea that this is a carpark ..
When I was researching parking places for my car art park project I realised quite how many places are managed by another company. This sub contracting , outsourcing made any spontaneous extraordinary use of space difficult to even begin to consider.
Realisation that ‘ownership’ does not actually always enable the ‘owner ‘ to make decisions about the use of it because they have outsourced that or at least distanced themselves from the immediate decision. Thank you again to those people /organisations who very kindly let me park my project on their ground. Maybe time to work on a new project?
oh way more than 50 .
Driving around, or being driven, taking the bus or getting the train. It is the green that hits you. Bright young leaves on the tress gradually unfurling, set those against the dark evergreen firs.
Hedges tall, where they are allowed to be useful and reach upwards and out, are frothy with hawthorn blossom and underneath, the verges sway with cow parsley foam. And places where the cow parsley does not have so tight a hold ( and it can be a suffocator ) there are verges where the Ox eye daisy spots seem to float above the grass .
It is hard to think of anything more beautiful than these scenes at the moment, a gorgeous time if the year.
What you don’t get whizzing along, is the detail and the other wild plants. Just perceptible those patches in purple yellow crimson and white. Need to get out and walk along the roadside more to appreciate the variety. An essential variety.
And I hope it is not a breach of the ethical standards if I share the prescription.
I am not sure that I mentioned the car art park blog or project .. Fairly certain I did not which makes the prescribed poem even more remarkable.
For everyone stuck in their car and considering the view and the what ifs or even dipping occasionally into my commuter journeys
then perhaps the shared prescription may be useful too. Look up

I am told to take this with tea and birdsong but sitting at lunch time in the works canteen, chattering burble and cutlery scraping plates around seems to work too.. Catching ‘the heart off guard and blow it open’ hits a nerve here now .
Ok, it is right that on Friday I was not taking the longer journey by car, but just getting down to the main road, I had to question ‘what is happening?’ Is it a Sunday? There was so little traffic, had the day been declared suddenly a national holiday. (Yes, to add fuel to another debate probably happening somewhere else, we should have an autumn bank holiday)
Anyway this was a time when it is ‘good’ to drive, there was no queue, no distractions just the getting from A to B .. and because of the conditions I made B a lot further away and the journey was the thing. Because the present was the actual journey in the car, and it went so quickly, it was easy to miss (disregard) entirely what was being driven through. Because this was so unusual – no holdups, so I did continue rather than parking sooner to catch the bus, and yet. This made the Friday event the drive, because there was no time to stop and stare at anything else.
Again though if the roads were always clear, then using the bus would be more straightforward – they would keep to timetable because of the reduced number of blocked roads – more people could use them – more bus routes opened, because that would be the transport of choice and opportunity.
Getting off the point … because the journey was quick, no queues, no delays the attention did not wander, and the places passed through did just disappear, insignificant.
Road traffic so heavy
Everywhere so slow
Only following plan to be able to get home tonight quickly
Might need a rethink if same plan represents itself for another day
Of course the main issue is that I want to do something in the day
I need to get home to do more of something in the evening
And I want to go out (ha for relaxation and yoga) in the evening
And have meal with family
Doing less would release the pressure
Making getting somewhere slower more permissible
Being a little more realistic – more healthy
And that probably would apply to a lot of the people also sat in their cars around me .
Today it is probably the relaxation class which will be missed.
